Striking Carriage alarm Clock with Centre Sweep Seconds hand
A nice example of an 1890s French carriage antique clock in a polished and lacquered brass case of gorge styling with canted corners. It has the added glory of the moving sweep of the seconds hand, a rare addition on carriage antique clocks.
The eight day movement with original silvered lever platform escapement strikes the hours and the passing of the half hour on a bell, and repeats the last hour at the press of the button. It is signed for the maker with a B in a circle.
The perfect white enamel dial has Roman numerals above an Arabic alarm dial. It is signed Howell James & Co., TO THE QUEEN.
Howell James were a firm of jewellers and silversmiths based in Regent Street, London from 1819-1911, and would have been the original retailers of this antique clock.
