Smiths were known as makers of quality instruments and motor accessories when they formed Smiths English Clocks Ltd and started producing domestic antique clocks in 1931. They were one of the first companies to produce synchronous electric clocks towards the end of 1931. By 1947 at the British Industries Fair they were advertising as "the World's foremost Manufacturers of Precision Instruments and Clocks" - with their production including the "Sectric" range as well as all types of synchronous and mechanical antique clocks, timepieces, alarms, striking, chiming, wall and marine clocks, as well as master clock systems, time recorders and turret clocks, and also pocket, wristlet and stop watches. The company continued to grow, acquiring various companies including Enfield in 1949. Smiths continued innovating through the 1950s and 60s, producing several models of clocks with patents designed to improve timekeeping however, following further restructuring, Smiths ceased producing domestic clocks in 1979.
