Small Drop Dial Wall Clock by Reid & Sons, Newcast
An excellent example of a small drop dial oak wall antique clock in completely original condition.
The 8-inch dial is signed Reid & Sons, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and numbered M.R. 283/990. Ian Lyman in his book RAILWAY CLOCKS speculates that the 283 may be the clock number and the 990 might represent the date of purchase - September 1990. Unfortunately we do not know what the M.R. stands for. Reid & Sons did supply the northern parts of London North Eastern Railway with some of their antique clocks, but it is not known that they supplied Midland Railways, this being too far south. This is possibly a factory clock therefore, or certainly a public clock of sorts.
The quality fusee timepiece movement has shaped plates. It is photographed here before its overhaul, which is currently under way in our workshops.
The oak case has hinged base and side doors for access to the pendulum. The backbox is held to the movement / dial by way of three pegs, all original.
Reid & Sons still exist in Newcastle today, but they were taken over by Mappin & Webb some decades ago, and no clock / watch numbering records remain sadly.
Height: 35cms ( 14 inches)
Width: 27cms ( 10½ inches)
Depth: 13cms ( 5¼ inches)
