Set Framed Buddhist Kammavaca Manuscript Panels
A Stunning and Complete Set of 18 Antique Buddhist Kammavaca Manuscript Panels
Dating to around the late 19th century and of Burmese origin.
The Kammavaca is an important Burmese religious text of the Theravada Buddhist Canon. They describe the rules governing monastic life and the daily affairs of Buddhist monks and nuns. Such panels were often commissioned by family members on an auspicious occasions, for example such as a friend or family member being ordained.
This is a particularly beautiful set and benefits from being complete with all 18 leaves, including the two gilt and lacquered wooden end boards, each beautifully illuminated with designs in red and gold.
The black script in a 'compressed' design known as Pali.....the glossy black colour derived from the extract of tamarind seeds.
Each metal leaf has been carefully pinned / mounted, framed and glazed, elevating this lot to an especially appealing and highly decorative piece of art for the wall. They would look absolutely splendid in any interior but especially one with a South-East Asian or Buddhist theme or interest. The backing board is of a soft slate-grey tone, with a deep recess and black edging, all of which sets the gilt metal leaves off to wonderful effect. It is rare to find these leaves mounted and framed with such care as this - so all of the costly work in getting these to the point where they can be seen and displayed has been done!
These panels are large and hard to miss and represent a high-end, outright find for the Eastern / Oriental decorator who is looking for a genuine, authentic and beautiful piece of wall art that is expressly not a reproduction or copy.
Priced to sell. A great buy at this level.
Collection in person preferred, or I can arrange for delivery at cost. Just email or call and we can discuss.
Dimensions -
Each framed panel measures 61.5 cms wide x 118 cms high
Condition -
Each leaf (with the exception of the two wooden end boards) is of metal ground, coated with a gilded and lacquer design. There is a little buckling and rippling to each metal leaf as shown. Also with a little peeling and loss to the lacquer surface in places. Each leaf has been pierced twice and attached to the backing board with small metal pins.
The frames are in good order.
Overall they display extremely well, calling the viewer in to observe at close quarters.
