Scottish Mahogany Break-Arch Bracket Clock
An attractive Regency period table antique clock with a painted dial.
The substantial, 8 day duration, double fusee movement with wide pallets, Anchor Recoil escapement and rack striking the hours on a top-mounted bell. Also having strike/silent, a light pendulum and engraved backplate with an edge border and being geometrically reversed floral Rococo style.
Behind a 7 7/8" wide painted iron break-arch dial. The arch having gilt floral swags, two opposing birds and an oval central makers plaque bearing “J. EDWARD (S). ALLOA”. The dial corners have green and gilt fan decoration and the border lined centre has outer, Arabic 5’s, crow's foot hour markings, dotted minute numerals, Roman hour numerals and inner Arabic and dot calendar markings. Also having diamond lattice blued steel hands. It has a strike/silent select lever to the right side edge.
Contained in a triple pad-top well-figured mahogany case. The three raised pads have brass framing and the central pad has a cast brass swinging carrying handle. The all-round returned top moulding sits over the full-size locking and glazed front door that has brass piping to the sides and a brass frame to the aperture. This in turn sits over the short all-round plinth with a moulded top. The case sides have high rectangular sound apertures with cloth-backed, brass fish scale frets. The case rear also has a full-size locking and glazed door with brass piping to the side edges.
This is a very attractive table clock that is totally original and with an unusual dial. The case is well-figured and of the most beautiful colour, it is also very competitively priced. Apart from the removed datework and hand which could be re-instated, everything else is there and it really is glorious.
