Rosa Branson MBE b.1933 Still Life Oil Painting
We are pleased to offer for sale this beautifully executed, still life, oil painting on canvas by the artist Rosa Branson, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 2008. The painting depicts an arrangement of items redolent of the sea, an angel fish perched on some coral, a seahorse, a large mother of pearl shell and a pearl necklace, all laid out on some sea green fabric.
Rosa Branson was born in 1933, the daughter of the artist Clive Branson and her father was the inspiration for her work. He had promised to teach her to paint, but was, unfortunately, killed abroad at the end of WWII and was unable to fulfil this promise. However this only made Rosa more determined to become a real painter.
However, she graduated from Camberwell School of art, joined the Slade School, but found that she still had not acquired the skills needed to meet her needs. She has been told that, as a female, it was only appropriate for her to paint small works and that she would need to paint for at least 6 hours a day to become a professional painter. She went on to learn by copying the Old Masters at the National Gallery, where she was noticed by their Chief Restorer Professor Helmut Ruhemann, from whom she received tuition and guidance for the next six years.
Her main speciality is the Old Master oil painting technique of laying subtle glazes of translucent paint over each other, and her subjects include portraiture, still life, animal paintings and, over the last 20 years, painting many large scale (8' x 5' ) paintings to promote the work of charities such as the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, Oxfam, Barnardos and Rotary International. She has donated at least 15 of these large painting to charity to enable them to raise funds.
She was awarded an MBE in 2010 for her services to art and charity and in 2013, an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Winchester. A photograph of her receiving this is available on google images.
She is also involved with the Worlington Project, which seeks to promote classical in drawing and painting for art students and young artists and has mentored several rising artist such as Tanja Hassell and Heath Rosselli.
Rosa has produced over 600 paintings in her career and works 7 hours every day of the week at her busy studio in Highgate in North London and has done so for 60 years. She starts at 9 a.m. every day and finishes at 5 p.m. This is a fantastic work ethic for a lady of over 80.
