Rodney Charman Oil Tea Clipper On The Thames Rodney J K Charman Marine Oil Painting %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to offer for sale this rather beautiful and serene painting by the English artist Rodney John Keith Charman, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it '79, for 1979. He has also entitled the painting on the back of the canvas 'An old Tea Clipper anchored by Rotherhithe'. A church spire which may be that of St. Mary's Rotherhithe is visible to the left while the busy River Thames is represented by several Thames barges with the brown sails, a tug and another smaller sailing ship.

For those not familiar with London, Rotherhithe is situated on the south bank of the Thames and was formerly a small village in the county of Surrey. It was the location of the first docks created for London and has until recent years been inhabited by seamen and those connected with the maritime world. It was from here that the Mayflower sailed for America and The Mayflower pub still exists on the banks of the Thames. It is also the location for the first successful under the Thames tunnel, still in use today for main line trains, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, built between 1825 and 1843 and a Brunel Museum exists in Rotherhithe in the old engine house.

Rodney Charman was born in Lymington, Hampshire in 1944, where he still resides. He is a marine artist and there are 45 auctions results achieved for his work in recent years on artprice.com and where the highest price achieved for one of his paintings is over £2,2000 plus premium at Christies. A fuller biography follows.

'Rodney Charman is a Maritime Artist celebrated for both his meticulous detail and atmospherics. He is a self -taught artist, painting since he was 21. The son of a Naval Officer and a passionate sailor, Charman soon turned to painting marine scenes, his oeuvre particularly distinguished by atmospheric effects.

Rodney has traveled extensively to research his paintings, including Hong Kong, China, Nova Scotia, and the US. A permanent collection of his work may be seen at the Egan Institute, Nantucket, MA a Maritime History of the fabled island fleet, cataloged by a fully illustrated book, published in 1989.
Another exhibition, 'The Famine Ships', presented by the South Street Seaport Museum, New York in 1998 was also accompanied by a book.

A frequent exhibitor at the Royal Society of Marine Artists in London, many of Charman's paintings have been published as Fine Art prints, one of them becoming the third highest selling print in the UK.

With tall ship sailing experience aboard the topsail schooner 'Malcolm Miller' and having raced regularly in 'X' boats at Lymington, Hampshire, where he lives, Charman has enjoyed plenty of opportunity to experience the atmospheric elements he so adroitly portrays'.
