Richard Cromwell Indenture 1658
Richard Cromwell Vellum Indenture dated 5th November 1658. Handwritten in English and Latin with the elaborate penned Initial Letter and name of Richard. The document relates to a Court Case held in Bury St Edmunds, relating to an incident in Carlton Colville, Suffolk. The case was heard before Oliver Cromwell and then Richard Cromwell.
There are 43 lines of English and Latin. The Great Seal of Office is partly attached but in fragments.
The Document was later used as Evidence in another Court Case dated 10th March 1697/98
Richard Cromwell was Head of State from September 1658 to May 1659.
Brief Translation of the First 5 Lines
Richard Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland and the Dominions and Territories, hereto belonging to all to whom these our present letters shall come, Greetings. We have sent a certain record had in the time of Oliver, late Lord Protector of the Commonwealth aforesaid, our late father of famous memory deceased, in the Court of Upper Bench at Welsud which said record followeth in the words before Oliver, Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland and the Dominions and Territories hereto belonging to the Upper Bench at Welsud of the tenure of the Holy Trinity in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand Six Hundred Fifty and Eight
