Regency Period Child’s Chair Doll Teddy
As Thomas Sheraton pointed out in his Cabinet Dictionary of 1803, chair-making ‘requires a particular turn in the handling of shapes, to make them agreeable and easy’. This chair was manufactured in England during the early 19th century and it is likely to have been specially commissioned with a set of library chairs from one of the high-end London cabinetmakers. The chair is made of mahogany and rosewood and it has recently been re-caned and lightly polished to recapture the beauty of the rich grain and patina. This is a fine example of London’s chair-making skills during the Regency period, less than ten years after Sheraton’s Dictionary was published. Although the chair was designed and manufactured for a child, it would also be suitable for displaying a treasured teddy bear or doll. Item No. 0019.
