Rare Welsh Folk Art Butter Scoop Spoon Treen

A stunning unique early 19thC Antique Welsh Butter Spoon of incredible form, superbly carved from a single piece of sycamore. Purchased from a hill farm near Penuwch Ceredigion. This example being of particularly high quality, expertly carved and of a far nicer design than the common later examples. The butter scoops of this area having an interesting serrated edge to the bowl. This was to enable the scraping of the butter which was hard so to being made with a high salt content to aid preservation.
An extremely interesting example featuring a pole lathe turned handle with knop to end and decorative ring turning. The whole spoon being in the form of a birds wing or feather suggesting that this spoon is symbolic of far more than its utilitarian purpose and that it was likely carved to be gifted as a love token or as an example of their craftsmanship intended for an entry in a local Eisteddfod competition.
Love spoons are found in a huge variety of designs and are often based on everyday utilitarian objects such as Dolphin Spoons, Cawl Spoons, Ladles and scoops. The use of these traditional and familiar forms strengthen the symbolism of the Welsh love spoon making these design types amongst the most important and desirable.
In superb condition with lovely surface and gorgeous soft mellow colour.
Length 24.5cm
