Rare Welsh chair of importance
A Welsh Chair of Historical importance. This chair was clearly made for a man of wealth and importance. Note the drawer underneath to lock his valuables away during those turbulent times during the early 18th century in Wales. The seat hight is also significant as is the wear on the front stretcher. Most Welsh chairs of the period are 15” from the seat to the floor. This chair is 19”. Almost throne like. The average height of a Welshman at the start of the 18th century was 5’2”. You can see how the front stretcher has worn away, his feet not being able to touch the ground. Note also the high arms. This would have raised and widened shoulders when resting his arms. Making him appear more imposing whilst holding his court. A truly rare and beautiful piece.
