Rare Scottish longcase clock - Miller of Edinburgh
A very rare Scottish longcase clock featuring solid and veneered birds eye maple cabinetwork.
The high quality 8 day duration movement strikes the hours on a bell and has a recoil anchor escapement. The round painted dial features matching blued steel hands, Roman numerals and the makers name is very finely painted across the centre of the dial, Richard Millar & Son, Edinburgh. Also with seconds and date rings.
The beautifully proportioned birds eye maple case is of typical drumhead design has high quality veneers throughout with cylindrical columns to the trunk. Also with a three quarter length trunk door and with a veneered rectangular panel below. The base has a raised single moulding and a shaped bracket feet. To the hood a glazed and turned wooden bezel allows access to the dial. The plain drum shaped top which is typical of the period and Edinburgh area is mounted upon turned horizontal supports.
Note: The use of birds eye maple at any period or even any type of antique furniture is rare but we have never seen it used on a drumhead longcase clock. Richard Millar & Son with prolific Clockmakers in Edinburgh. It’s possible that this may have been a specially commissioned order to match existing antique furniture.
