Rare English Charles II Oak Wainscot Armchair c.1680
In General
A wonderful and rare, 17th Century, English, Charles II, highly decorated, hand carved oak Wainscot armchair c.1680. The Chair has an intricately carved scrollwork top rail, above a beautiful, decorative floral inlaid back panel, showing a bird within a tree. In the centre of the top rail there is a striking hand carved man’s face with a flamboyant moustache! A reference possibly to the Green Man.
The Chair has elegant, long, down swept arms on turned arm supports. There is a boarded seat with a decorative seat rail. The legs rise up from block feet with later metal caps joined by stretchers.
Excellent provenance - we are advised by a local antiques expert that this Wainscot chair is likely to have come from Battle Abbey. Battle Abbey is world famous as it is one of England's most significant historic sites. In 1066 the armies of King Harold and William the Conqueror fought here at the highly significant Battle of Hastings.
It's incredible to imagine the history that this Chair has been surrounded by - being some 340 years old from new. The Chair's wonderful aged, warm and tactile patina comes from hundreds of years of loving care from the various people who have owned this Chair down the Centuries.
This Chair was a gift from East Sussex County Council to the Battle Rural District Council in 1934 as stated in the plaque on the back of the Chair dated 1934.
