Portrait of a Lady. Scottish School. c.1695
Portrait of a Lady c.1695 in a faux oval frame. Expressively painted portrait by an anonymous artist of a lady with an engaging and intelligent face. The drapery has been particularly well executed and is reminiscent of the work of Charles Dagar, a Huguenot artist of the period.
Unusually, the lady wears a drapery around her head in a simplified version of the 'fontange a la sultane' , a fashionable headdress of the period.
The emphasis of the painting does indeed seem to be the drapery. Drapery in painting of the period was extremely important, and I can't help but wonder if this painting was of a friend of the artist, intended as sample.
The portrait is in good condition, unframed.
Provenance An old Scottish collection - property of a Lady.
