Philip Boileau Lithograph Girl with Chrysanthemums
We are offering for sale this lovely Edwardian lithograph by the artist Philip Boileau, who has signed the lithograph within the plate and dated it 1905. The lithograph depicts a beautiful young woman with brown hair, who is wearing typical Edwardian clothes and is holding two large chrysanthemums. Her hair is piled up on top of her head and is adorned with another chrysanthemum. We have, unfortunately, been unable to find out the original title of this work.
This is one of a pair of lithographs by this artist that we are currently listing and they have been framed to match.
Philip Boileau was born in Quebec, Canada on 7th June, 1863. His father was a French Diplomat posted to Canada and his mother was American. He lived in Canada, New York and Paris, where some of his early work was created. He moved to America and painted portraits, primarily in pastels, of society ladies. As his work became popular, his 'Boileau Girls', were used for everything from postcards, magazine covers, book covers, calendars and even beer trays. He was a very prolific artist despite his short life.
His most famous work 'Peggy' was believed to have been inspired by his wife Emily Gilbert, who was a drama student and who he married in 1907, when he was 45 and she was 21. Tragically he died of pneumonia at his home in Long Island on 18th January 1917 at the early age of 53.
Two years before his death, he was awarded 2nd price in the Pictorial Review Magazine 'Artist of the Year' in 1915. Reinthal & Newman produced a huge range of postcards of a large number of his works. To see many images of the 'Boileau Girls' please look on google images.
