Percy Robertson RE Watercolour Tantallon Castle
We are delighted to offer for sale this beautifully toned watercolour by the artist Percy Robertson RE, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a view of the ruins of Tantallon Castle on the Scottish Coast.
Tantallon Castle is a ruined mid-14th-century fortress, located 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) east of North Berwick, in East Lothian, Scotland. It sits atop a promontory opposite the Bass Rock, looking out onto the Firth of Forth. The last medieval curtain wall castle to be constructed in Scotland, Tantallon comprises a single wall blocking off the headland, with the other three sides naturally protected by sea cliffs.
Tantallon was built in the mid 14th century by William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas. It was passed to his illegitimate son, George Douglas, later created Earl of Angus, and despite several sieges, it remained the property of his descendants for much of its history. It was besieged by King James IV in 1491, and again by his successor James V in 1528, when extensive damage was done. Tantallon saw action in the First Bishops' War in 1639, and again during Oliver Cromwell's invasion of Scotland in 1651, when it was once more severely damaged. It was sold by the Marquis of Douglas in 1699 to Hew Dalrymple, Lord North Berwick and the ruin is today in the care of Historic Environment Scotland.
Percy Robertson RE (1868–1934) was an English watercolour landscape painter and etcher.
Robertson was born in Bellagio, Lombardy, Italy. His father, also a painter and engraver, was Charles Robertson and his mother was Alice Mary, the daughter of the colonist Captain William Lonsdale (1799–1864), who supervised the founding of Port Phillip, later to become the location of Melbourne in Australia. Between 1883 and 1885, he was educated with his brothers at Charterhouse School in England, where he won the Leech Prize for drawing in 1884.
In 1887, Robertson was elected to the Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, later to become the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. He was elected a full Fellow of the Society in 1908.
Robertson exhibited 33 artworks at the Royal Academy in London and 166 works at the Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. He lived in Godalming and painted and etched in the county of Surrey, including in Guildford from St Catherine's Hill (1891), Shere (1899), and Albury (1905).
In 1905, Percy Robertson married Edith Helen Nash ("Nelly"). They lived in London, where he produced pictures of street scenes and the River Thames. He also lived in Maidenhead on the Thames west of London and in 1911 was living at The Cherries, Courthouse Lane, Maidenhead. He died on 6th January 1934 at 11 Sheen Common Drive, Richmond, Surrey, leaving effects totalling £21,889 to his widow, Edith Helen Robertson. They had no children.
Robertson's artworks are held by Godalming Museum.
