A charming pair of oil paintings depicting children by Italian artist Giovanni Maresca. The pair show two boys one walking and whistling the other standing against a wall smoking. The works are typical of the artist who worked at the end of the nineteenth century and specialised in this sort of commercial painting, indeed he painted the smoking boy several times as it was so popular. The paintings are on canvas but have been laid down on panel and are both signed. The paintings are framed in period gilt frames which are actually slightly different sizes though the paintings are not. The paintings and the frames are in excellent condition and ready to hang. C.1900.
