19th Century Marine Shipwreck Painting – Fast on the Rocks off Dunstanburgh Castle, 1876
By Claude Thomas Stanfield Moore (British, 1853–1901)
Subject & Medium
A dramatic coastal marine painting by Claude Thomas Stanfield Moore. Fast on the Rocks off Dunstanburgh Castle, dated 1876, is a powerful meditation on human fragility, natural force, and historic endurance. Executed in oil on board, this atmospheric seascape captures a storm-lashed shipwreck beneath the silhouette of Dunstanburgh Castle on the Northumberland coast.
In the foreground, a shattered three-masted sailing ship lies broken against jagged rocks, its sails torn and mast collapsed. Nearby, sailors in lifeboats struggle against crashing waves, their fight for survival unfolding beneath circling gulls and turbulent skies. Above, the medieval ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle rise in dark silhouette, standing as timeless witnesses to tragedy.
Composition & Technique
Moore’s composition reflects the Romantic tradition, balancing dramatic realism with symbolic depth.
Foreground: jagged rocks, foaming seas, and the fractured hull of the wreck.
Central focus: sailors in fragile boats battling the storm.
Background: Dunstanburgh Castle silhouetted against cliffs and storm clouds.
Atmosphere: storm light pierced by golden shafts, symbolizing hope amid disaster.
Brushwork: Broad, expressive strokes for waves and clouds contrast with precise rigging, cliffs, and architectural detail.
Palette: Deep greens, steel blues, and blacks dominate the sea ochres and siennas warm the wreckage storm greys and silvers dissolve into radiant gold.
The influence of Turner is clear in the handling of light and atmosphere, while Clarkson Stanfield’s nautical precision grounds the work in detail. The result is not merely a literal scene, but a Romantic allegory of endurance, tragedy, and history.
