Painting Cherub Angel Children Sir Joshua Reynolds 19thc Oil Paintings Cherub Children Paintings After Sir Joshua Reynolds %%alt5%%
The original painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) was entitled A Child's Portrait in Different Views 'Angel's Heads' and was painted in 1786-7. This was several views of the head of the 5 year old Lady Frances Isabella Keir Gordon (1782-1831) who sat for Reynolds in July and August 1786 and again in March 1787, the year in which it was exhibited. She was the only daughter of Lord William Gordon and his wife Frances Ingram (1761-1841), on whose death in 1841 it was bequeathed to the National Gallery. It is now on view at Tate Britain.

ABOUT THIS RARE EXAMPLE

We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely oil painting painted after 1885 (the date of her marriage to Charles Lewis Floris) by the artist Emily J. Floris , whose name is inscribed on the stretcher of the canvas. The painting is also inscribed on the canvas 'Original picture by Sir Joshua Reynolds in the National Gallery'.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Emily Jane Floris was born in Lambeth in 1843 and married the artist Charles Lewis Floris (1848-1931) in 1885 in Windsor. In the Census records of 1891 and 1911, they were living at 7 Fitzwilliam Road, Clapham, London. Emily died in the borough of Wandsworth in 1920 and Charles in 1931. They were both listed as Artists and Picture Painters, although in 1911 Charles was also listed as an Art Teacher.

Emily has 1 painting in the National Collection - a portrait of John Hannah, Vicar of Brighton which is in the Brighton & Hove Museum. A collection of 7 of her watercolours was sold by Christie's in 2004 for £1,076 at South Kensington, the first one of which was a picture of a young girl entitled 'Innocence'.

We also found a book for sale online entitled Reynolds and Children's Portraiture in England by W. J. Loftie, published by Blackie & Son, which contains a section called Practical hints for figure painting in watercolour by E. J. Floris.
