Original First World War Recruitment Poster Caffyn
This original First World War recruitment poster was designed by William Henry Caffyn and was printed by The Haycock-Cadle Co. It features a soldier in uniform marching off to war. The wording reads 'Come Along Boys! "The moment the order came to go forward, there were smiling faces everywhere." (Extract from letter written in the trenches of the Aisne by General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien). Enlist To-Day.' The printer's details are along the bottom of the poster together with the statement 'Issued by the Publicity Department, Central London Recruiting Depot, Whitehall, London'.
Condition Overall in fair condition with some damage and would benefit from some restoration work. It is quite brittle and fragile. It has been stored folded for some time and so is badly creased and in some areas is splitting. There are various edge nicks and tears. The bottom edge of the poster is crumpled with some large tears and there is some damage and splitting to the letter extract above. There is also a hole on the right-hand side near the bottom. There is a large edge tear about half way up on the right-hand side. There ares some small holes and losses near the top of the poster. The poster is overall discoloured (browned with age), grubby, faded and has some foxing (brown spotting).
Please note that the poster will be sent in a tube so it may arrive with a curve in it in addition to the creases.
The approx. measurements are as follows
50cm by 74cm.
