Orientalist Oil on Canvas Figures in the Soukh
We are delighted to offer for sale this fascinating and atmospheric painting of figures in an Arab Soukh by an unknown artist. It has been painted in an impressionist style, with hints of realism in the figure work and is wonderfully evocative of the atmosphere of the Soukh, many years ago.
There is a robed figure of a woman, scurrying into a doorway to the extreme right and another to the left, whilst another is walking away in the centre foreground. There is a workshop to the right, with two figures silhouetted against a light, possibly from a fire or kiln. As you look further into the painting, you can see a myriad of figures walking the narrow street, with shop awnings to the left and right, the whole illuminated by shafts of light coming down from skylights between the arches of the roof. There is great depth in the painting, which has been executed in masterful fashion.
We think that the artist was Continental, possibly Italian, as the canvas is of the fine linen type often seen in Italian paintings and the stretcher was home made. We would date the painting, in our opinion, to the first half of the twentieth century.
The painting has been newly framed in a 3 1/2" reeded silver gilt frame which suits it very well. It is ready to hang.
