Old Price Riots Handbill 1809
Covent GardenTheatre Old Price Riots Handbill 1809. In 1808 the original Covent Garden Theatre was destroyed by fire. On the opening night 18th September 1809,the management raised the prices to help cover the new building costs.In protest the audience refused to leave at the end of the production. The management had to call the Bow Street Police to try to remove the rioters. The riots lasted 3 months and eventually the Manager John Kemble was forced to make a public apology.
