A fine and interesting oil on canvas portrait of an old man. The work is beautifully done with a wonderful use of light and shade. It is most likely this was an exam piece due to marks on the reverse of the canvas indicative of art schools, it is also from a German speaking country. The painting is signed to the lower left, however it is illegible. The painting is in excellent condition having been professionally cleaned. It is framed in a period gilt frame which is in excellent untouched condition. C.1900.
