Oak Wainscot Chair with Holly & Bog Oak
A very fine mid 17th Century oak wainscot ‘Great Chair’ made by a skilled hand and probably from the Leeds area with a beautiful naturally developed rich colour to the oak, good patination, pegged joints and well carved crest rail and ears.
The large back panel superbly carved with leafy foliate scrolls and chip carved lozenges, bold and fluid - the work of an expert carver.
The chair has lovely marquetry inlays of holly and bog oak in a repeating geometric pattern bordering the back panel and running below the crest rail.
All the chair’s timbers appear original including the seat boards which are fixed with hand forged iron rivets. There are some small and well blended scarfed in sections of oak here and there – professional restoration to the feet which has enabled retention of the original stretchers and chair is level and sound without weakness to the joints. Some evidence of old worm, long since dead, and old depletions and chips and knocks consistent with this chair’s great age.
Really good and early chair, solid and robust and surprisingly comfortable
Dimensions are:
44 inches high, 22 inches wide, 22 inches deep (all max)
Height of seat from floor is 16 inches, the width between the arms is 19 inches at front, the depth of seat from front to back is 15 inches and the height of the back from the seat is 28 inches I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
