N. Gavagnin 1851-1923 WaterColour Bridge Of Sighs

We are offering this incredibly detailed watercolour by the Italian artist Natale Gavagnin, who has signed the painting Gavagnin to the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a more unusual view of the Ponte dei Sospiri, or Bridge of Sighs in Venice, as it looks out into the Venetian Lagoon and shows a view of San Giorgio Maggiore. There is a covered gondola being rowed up the Rio de Palazzo, which is the name of the canal pictured.
The Bridge of Sighs, was constructed of white limestone in 1600 and was opened in 1602. It has stone bars on its windows and was the last view that convicted criminals saw when crossing from the Doge's Palace to the right to the New Prison to the left.
Natale Gavagnin was born in Venice in 1851, possibly the brother of Napoleone Gavagnin born 1840 and son of Leonardo Gavagnin born 1909. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice as did Napoleone and began exhibiting from 1871, in both Milan and Venice. He painted in both watercolours and oils, historical, landscapes and genre and is mostly known for his Venetian views. We have read that he died in 1923, but cannot confirm this.
The Watercolour has been double mounted in cream and is framed in a simple reeded silver gilt frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 11 1/2" x 6 1/2" - 29.2cm x 16.5cm
Frame size: 19 1/4" x 13 3/4" - 48.9cm x 33.9cm
Medium: Watercolours
Condition: Very good with no foxing or fading. The mounts and frame are new.
