A lovely quality Mouseman adzed oak ‘X’ Stool with original slung cow hide seat supported by two cross shaped legs linked by stretchers. The leather seat has white hide stitching at the edges and the carved mouse signature is climbing up one of the legs. Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson set up his oak furniture manufacturing business in Yorkshire as part of an Arts and Crafts inspired movement in the 1920s. He used the famous mouse as his signature, and when he died in 1955, his family continued the business using this mark. It is said that it arose from a conversation with a working colleague about being “as poor as a church mouse” and has always been an indicator of a quality piece of furniture which attracts many collectors.

Dating to the 1960s, this is made of oak and leather, and originates from Yorkshire, England.

In good age related condition, the hide has some darker discolouration indicative of long use where it folds over the frame. This adds to the aged character of the piece.
