We are offering for sale this lovely watercolour with chalk and charcoal portrait of a Borzoi dog by the artist Margaret Isobel Stopford-Claremont, who has signed the portrait M.I. Claremont, with the two initials monogrammed, in the lower left hand corner. The portait depicts a head and shoulders view of a tan and white Borzoi.

Margaret, sometimes called Margo, Isobel Stopford Clarement, nee Young,was born on 22nd May, 1920 She married Stanley Stopford Claremont (1917-1989) in 1947. In 1948, Margaret travelled to Sierra Leone, and, while there, did a pair of pastel portraits of Africans, which we have seen online. In 1952, she travelled to Quebec, Canada with her two young sons. She died at 15 St. Peter's Road, Croydon on 28th June, 1992.

She was a member of the Society of Women Artists and of the Croydon Art Society. She obviously painted in various media, as we found a large oil of an elderly man and his budgerigars entitled Friends, which was dated 1967. She obviously painted for many years, although much of her work may well be in private hands.

The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid-free mountboard and is newly fromed in a 1 1/4 inch gilt frame to suit. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
