Luigi Pagan Impressionist Oil St. Marks Venice
We are offering for sale this large, impressionist oil painting by the Italian artist Luigi Pagan, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner.
The painting depicts The Piazzetta in Venice taken from The Molo, and shows the Cathedral of St. Mark's or San Marco in the centre, with the antique clock to the left and The Doge's Palace to the right. It is a wet day and the many figures are sheltering under umbrellas.
Luigi Pagan was born in Chioggia, near Venice in 1907, the eldest son of a poor fisherman. As he lost his father early in life, he had to help to provide for his two younger brothers. While working in Turin, he also studied art and later studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. Scenes in Chioggia and Venice form the bulk of his work. He was an impressionist painter who captured the light and atmosphere of his subjects. He died in 1980.
His work is well represented on the auction sites, with 54 listings on artprice.com etc. and many paintings shown in google images. His paintings achieve high prices, with the paintings of St. Marks Square achieving the majority of the highest.
