Liberty Childs Chair designed by Ford Madox Brown
Liberty Childs chair designed by Ford Madox Brown and made by William Watt
This chair was retailed by Liberty in 1884 and called the "Argyll Suite" it came in various woods this one is called by Liberty "black wood" in other words ebonised beech, but they did it in oak walnut and mahogany as well. Designed by Ford Madox Brown this is a rare childs chair example. The difference between Ford Madox Brown's example of this chair for Morris & Co was the shape of the seat and the shape of the turnings on the front leg. This one clearly being a liberty example. See page 101 of Liberty's antique furniture 1875-1915 by Daryl Bennett. This is a good solid example of a great design piece. The chair was made by the famous manufacturers William Watt who made for Liberty's, this piece is also marked with his WW mark as the pictures show.
