We are delighted to offer this excellent watercolour by the renowned 19th Century artist Lewis John Wood, who has signed the painting L. J. Wood in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a busy street scene in St. Omer in the Pas de Calais, with the tall, square tower of the Cathedral of Notre Dame,in the centre background. On the right hand corner of the street is a shop which has written on the side of the upper storey 'Magasin de Habillement' which means clothing shop. In the street, is a closed covered wagon and there are many figures clustered around the entrance to the shop, as well as further down the street.

This is one of a pair of watercolours by this artist that we are listing.

Lewis John Wood was born in London in circa1816 and was an architectural painter in oils and watercolours and a lithographer. He exhibited from 1831-1891 at the Royal Academy 1831-1872 and also at Suffolk Street and the New Watercolour Society (205 works) and in the provinces. He was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1866 and a full member in 1870. He resigned his Membership in 1888. He was also elected a Full Member of the Royal Oil Painters Institute in 1883.

From 1836, after he first visited the Continent, he mainly painted scenes of Northern France and Belgium, such as this pair.

He was the father of Lewis Pinhorn Wood, and the grandfather of Lawson Wood, both well known artists. He lived for a number of years at 23 Park Road Hampstead. He died in Fulham in 1900, survived by his widow Maria and his children.

His biographical details are listed in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and The Dictionary of British Watercolours by H. Mallalieu.
