L.D. Warren 1906-92 U.S.A. Orig. Political Cartoon
We are offering for sale this rare, original cartoon by the American cartoonist Leonard Deakyn 'LD' Warren, 1906-1992, who has signed the cartoon to the centre base and inscribed it to the lower right in blue crayon 'To Fred Park with Warm Personal Regards LD Cincinnati Enquirer 6.24.70. Faintly below this also in blue crayon is written 33 1/2 PICAS? WED 24 JUNE 70. Unfortunately, we have been unable to identify the Fred Park referred to. We say this is a rare cartoon, because, being an American cartoonist, his subject matter is primarily the USA.
The cartoon shows Harold Wilson crushed below an avalanche of opinion polls, with a newspaper headline saying Britain's Polls 'Labor by a Landslide'. Underneath the cartoon the caption reads: 'I think public opinion polls have a lot of explaining to do!' Harold Wilson
The 1970 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 18 June 1970. It resulted in a surprise victory for the Conservative Party under leader Edward Heath, which defeated the governing Labour Party under Harold Wilson. The Liberal Party, under its new leader Jeremy Thorpe, lost half their seats. The Conservatives, including the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), secured a majority of 31 seats. This general election was the first in which people could vote from the age of 18, after passage of the Representation of the People Act the previous year.
Most opinion polls prior to the election indicated a comfortable Labour victory, and put Labour up to 12.4% ahead of the Conservatives. On election day, however, a late swing gave the Conservatives a 3.4% lead and ended almost six years of Labour government, although Wilson remained leader of the Labour Party in opposition. Writing in the aftermath of the election, the political scientist Richard Rose described the Conservative victory as "surprising" and noted a significant shift in votes between the two main parties. The Times journalist George Clark wrote that the election would be "remembered as the occasion when the people of the United Kingdom hurled the findings of the opinion polls back into the faces of the pollsters".
Leonard Deakyn "L.D." Warren (December 27, 1906 Wilmington, Delaware - May 14, 1992) was an American editorial cartoonist. Warren graduated from Camden High School in Camden, New Jersey, where his family eventually moved.
Warren worked at the New Jersey Courier Post, before joining the Philadelphia Record in 1927. At the Record, Warren drew feature, editorial and sports cartoons. In the 1930s, he also worked on a comic strip featuring Penny Penguin, a character for the Gulf Oil Corporation and contributed to Gulf Funny Weekly.
After twenty years with the Philadelphia Record, Warren moved to the Cincinnati Enquirer in 1947. While working as the Enquirer's editorial cartoonist, Warren's work was also syndicated through the McNaught Syndicate (1951–1974).
In 1973, Warren officially retired from the Cincinnati Enquirer, but continued to draw a weekly cartoon to the newspaper. He was also able to recommend his replacement, cartoonist Jim Borgman.
His work was shown at Ohio State University.
Warren received numerous awards from the Freedoms Foundation. He also won the National Headliner award in 1961. He was also nominated for the National Cartoonists Society Reuben award three times during his career. He received the American Legion 4th Estate award for his patriotic themes in 1974.
The World and Warren's Cartoons was published in 1977.
The cartoon isn't mounted, becuse of the writing underneath, but is glazed and framed in a 1/2" black frame with gold inner.

Medium: Ink, pain & wax crayon on embossed card
Condition: Some marks painted over by the artist to the borders, as well as some alterations to the cartoon in paint also by the artist. There is no damage to the card and the frame is in good condition with minor wear.
