Unusual late 19th.c. Chinese carved rosewood side chair c.1890. As is typical of Chinese art the design is full of pointed symbolism aimed at bringing the owner of the chair a long and happy life. Note how the backrest frame and rear legs are carved to resemble sprouting bamboo symbolising resilience whilst the centre splat features a seal with tasselled chord over a deer, a symbol for longevity and prosperity, amongst foliage. Sitting on top of the backrest crouches the stylised form of a bat, the symbol for happiness and joy. Unusual round seat carved around the ege with further foliate detail on a very un-Chinese style (but original) turned front leg suggesting the chair could well have been made for the colonial British Chinese market.
