Large Indian Miniature Painting of Diwan-i-Khas
This is a beautifully detailed miniature painting of the Diwan-i_Khas in the Red Fort of Delhi in an attractive contemporary gilt frame and gold coloured mount, circa 1900.
This is quite a bit larger than the typical miniature showing this interior and it has allowed for an extraordinary level of detail in the decoration of the columns, walls and ceiling.
The frame has a wooden back-board and picture wire strung between two screw eyes.
The Diwan-i-Khas was built in 1648 as a chamber for the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan to receive courtiers and state guests. It was also known as the Shah Mahal. The interior was completely plundered following the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The throne, the carpets, and any other items went missing. The hall today is, therefore, only a shell of what it used to be. Recent restoration work has been redone on the panels of inlay and has also reproduced the gilded pattern on one of the pillars fronting the hall.
Dimensions: Frame - 9" x 7" (22.5 x 18 cm)
Painting - 5" x 3 1/4" (12.7 x 8.2 cm)
Condition: Excellent. There is no damage to the painting, and the frame, apart from the gilding being a little rubbed in places, is also in very good condition. It is ready to hang.
Postage & Packing: £6.50 within the UK.
