Karl Kaufmann C.v. Erlach Oil Painting Cairo

C. v. Erlach (Karl Kaufmann, Austrian 1843 – 1902)
Cairo Rooftops with the Mosque of Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad
Oil on mahogany panel, 51.5 × 42 cm
Signed lower left C. v. Erlach (Karl Kaufmann)
A superb Orientalist cityscape of old Cairo viewed from the terraced quarter below the Citadel. The skyline unites some of the city’s most celebrated monuments: the Mosque of Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad with its red-and-white ablaq masonry and distinctive dome the adjacent Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa‘i Mosque and, to the left, the red-brick dome and carved minaret of the Mosque of Qaytbay. Kaufmann blends these landmarks into a single harmonious vista — an idealised yet topographically rooted panorama characteristic of his finest Egyptian works.
In the foreground, a rooftop terrace with woven carpet, palm and laundry line opens onto a narrow lane animated by merchants and figures in red and white robes. The quality mahogany panel preserves Kaufmann’s delicate impasto and atmospheric tonality, its surface entirely original.
A desirable Cairo subject, long held in a private collection and never previously offered on the market, this example stands among the most appealing compositions within Kaufmann’s Orientalist œuvre.
Condition: Excellent overall two minor, superficial grazes to the sky, scarcely visible except on close inspection. Subtly reframed at a later date.
No restoration visible under UV.
KARL KAUFMANN PSEUDONYMS:
Born in Vienna in 1843, Karl Kaufmann was a prolific Austrian landscape and architectural painter celebrated for his detailed cityscapes of Venice, Constantinople, and Cairo..
Throughout his career, Kaufmann often signed his paintings under a variety of pseudonyms — including C. von Erlach, F. Hertel, Charles Marchand, Henri Carnier, B. Lambert, and L. Marcy, among others.
Despite these aliases, the style is unmistakably Kaufmann’s: finely detailed architecture, bright and atmospheric.
Today, whether signed C. von Erlach or Karl Kaufmann, these works are recognised as belonging to the same accomplished hand — an artist who blended academic precision with romantic travel imagery, and whose paintings remain sought after across Europe and America.”
