James Baldock Oil Landscape dated 1855
We are delighted to offer for sale this oil on canvas by the artist JAMES WALSHAM BALDOCK, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1855. The painting depicts a rural scene, with a solitary rider on a white horse and his groom walking at the horse's head. There is a small peaty stream to the lower right foreground, with a track beside it and a row of trees along the bank. the sky is stormy.
JAMES WALSHAM BALDOCK, 1825-1898, was a self-taught artist, who was based in Worksop for many years, painting fine hunting, sporting and equestrian scenes in both oil and watercolours, but moved to Nottingham in 1884. In his early years, he was employed by Joseph Taylor, a Worksop house painter. He exhibited widely, as well as in Nottingham and Sheffield, where he was a founder member of the Sheffield Society of Artists, later becoming their president. Biographical details for this artist may be found in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and The Dictionary of British Artists.
He exhibited 16 paintings at Suffolk Street, according to Grays Dictionary, 69 in Nottingham, 1 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 5 at the Royal Society of British Artists, 1 at Manchester City Art Gallery, and 5 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour. There are 24 of his paintings in Bassetlaw Museum which covers the towns of Worksop and Retford, in Nottinghamshire.
Paintings by this artist achieve high prices, the record in recent years being £144,500 at Christies London in 2008, as well as £37,900 at Sothebys New York in 1994 and £27,000 at Christies London in 2005. The painting is framed in what may be its original frame and is ready to hang.
