Henry W. Henley Oil on canvas North Wales
We are delighted to offer for auction this large oil on canvas by the Victorian artist HENRY W. HENLEY, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and inscribed it verso 'On the Lleddr (sic) N. Wales H. W. Henley.' The painting depicts a view of the river Lledr in North Wales, with a fisherman seated on a rocky outcrop, casting his line into the quiet water of the pool. It is possibly a view of Beaver Pool looking from Beaver Bridge, as we have found a very similar view painted by William Henry Mander. The River Lledr was a very favourite location for Victorian artists.
Henry W. Henley, who was active in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, was a Birmingham artist who exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham. He specialised in landscape views of Wales and Scotland, most of which are quite dramatic, as is this one. Other than this, we have been unable to find further biographical information about him. He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists.
Auction records for prices achieved by works by this artist may be found at artprice (29 listings), findartinfo (19), artnet (15) and arcadja (16). His results in 2006 appear in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market, where one of his oils achieved £1,200 at Sotheby's. A pair of his Scottish oils reached £2,400 also at Sotheby's in 2001.
The painting is framed in a new 2 1/2" ornate swept gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
