Harvesting, Octavius Thomas Clark 1850 - 1921
Harvesting
Octavius Thomas Clark 1850 - 1921
Oil
A lovely bucolic scene by this much collected artist. The painting shows a harvest being gathered in late Summer and is typically English of the genre. Typically Clark painted in situ and ther is no reason to think that he departed from this style here. He worked quickly to record his images, faithfully reproducing the light and weather conditions that prevailed. A skilled painter of his era Clark is today much sought after in both the UK and USA where many of his works were reproduced in lithograph form by settlers to help them remember "home".
ARTIST INFORMATION
Born in Hoxton, New Town (just north of London, England) December 21, 1850. His father was a painter as were two of his older brothers. At age 24 he married his wife Ellen (December 1874.) The 1881 census report describes him as a painter living in Islington, not far from Hoxton. Mr Clark and his wife had 13 children. His youngest son Stanley (born in 1887) also worked as an artist. Octavius T Clark lived in or around east London between 1887 to the time of his death in 1921, Romford in Essex. I suppose today we would describe him as a journeyman artist.

ITEM INFORMATION & TERMINOLOGY
Every item we sell is fully guaranteed to be as we describe. We use the same cataloguing terms as most major auction houses The cataloguing terms that we use have the following meanings
1. where the text which forms reads "'by" and is followed by the artist's full name (or the artist's initials, if his full name is unrecorded), the work is in our opinion by the artist
2. where the expression "attributed to" is used, the work is in our opinion possibly a work by the artist, in whole or in part
3. where the expression "'circle of'" is used, the work is in our opinion a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence
4. where the expression "'follower of"' is used, the work is in our opinion a work executed in the artist's style but not necessarily by a pupil
5. where the expression '"manner of"' is used, the work is in our opinion a work executed in the artist's style but of a later date
6. where the term "after" is used, the work is in our opinion a copy or pastiche (of any date) of a work by the artist.
7. Where the term 'signed...' is used in our opinion the work has been signed by the artist, where the term 'with signature...' or 'bears signature...' is used in our opinion the signature is by a hand other than that of the artist.
