Hand Written Letter to Colonel Charles Herries
Hand Written Letter to Colonel Charles Herries from Bemjamin Kittmer of Walsingham, Norfolk dated April 23rd 1809. The writer was a Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant and Commissioner of Taxes for the County of Norfolk (1754-1831), whilst the recipient was an Army Colonel and London Merchant.
The letter relates to an incident in 1809 regarding the resignation of the Duke of York, on the 25th March 1809, as Commander-in-Chief of the Army, as a result of a scandal relating to his mistress Mary Anne Clarke's activities. Two years later the Duke was re-appointed and exonerated after it was revealed the Mary Anne Clarke had received money from the Duke's chief accuser.
Spencer Percival (mentioned in the letter) was the Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1807-1812, and later Prime Minister.
Colonel Charles Herries (1745-1819) is buried in Westminster Abbey.
The letter is folded to form its own envelope with Benjamin Kittmer's Seal. The envelope has a Walsingham franking and hand strike 8. Hand made paper.
