George VI Silver Photo Frame, Birmingham, 1939
This is an attractive George VI Sterling Silver Photo Frame with a 5.25ins by 3.25ins visible picture size. The frame is basically oblong with indented sides and base and a domed top. There is beaded decoration all around the outside rim. The back is plain wood.
The photo frame was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Green & Cadbury and dates to 1939. The firm was founded by Edwin Green around 1858 who was soon joined in partnership by Joel Cadbury, a cousin of the famous chocolate making family. Their principal business was making luxury buttons but they also produced what were termed silver fancy goods, particularly prayer book covers, photo frames, vanity and manicure sets and smoking accesories. They ceased trading at the start of the Second World War.
Condition is good, with just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated with use and the passage of time. It stands securely on its wooden easel strut. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The frame is 18.4cm / 7.2ins high by 12.2cm / 4.8ins wide and stands 8.2cm / 3.2ins deep with the strut fully extended. It weighs 159g / 5.6oz.
The hallmarks, on the bottom left hand corner of the frame, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter P for 1939 and the G & C Ld makers' mark for Green & Cadbury Ltd.
