George V Silver Bonbon Basket, Hamilton & Co, 1913
Here we have a fine quality George V Sterling Silver Bonbon Basket with folding handle. This very attractive basket has a pierced low footing, a pierced body and beaded decoration around the rim and along the sides of the handle.
The basket is made by or for Hamilton & Co of Calcutta and assayed in Chester in 1913. Hamilton & Co are the most famous jewellers and silversmiths of the British India period. Founded in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1808 by Robert Hamilton they remained in business until 1973 with branches also opening in Bombay (Mumbai), Delhi and Simla. They were renowned for their high quality silverware and were known as the Garrad & Co of India.
Much of what Hamilton & Co sold was made in India and they established their own set of silver marks for these items. This piece however was made in England and hallmarked in Chester before being exported to India, where as British silver it would have attracted a premium price.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over a 100 years of use and travel out and back to India! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The basket is 11.2cm / 4.4ins high to the top of the handle, 5.6cm / 2.2ins high to the rim and 12.4cm / 4.9ins in diameter across the rim. It weighs a substantial 92.1g / 3.25oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the base are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter N for 1913 and the H & Co makers mark for Hamilton & Co. It also has the retail stamp Hamilton & Co Calcutta.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the basket.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
