George J. Knox Watercolour Village Scene Dtd 1866
We are pleased to offer this lovely, small, but extremely well detailed watercolour by the Irish artist George James Knox, who has signed the painting G. J. Knox in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1866. The watercolour bears a label from E. Stacy-Marks, showing the Provenance that the painting was owned by General Alexander of Carnbee, Nr. Fife in Scotland showing that they had presumably remounted it in 1988, although the frame appears to be the original. The label also states that the title of the painting is 'Cottages by a Stream'. G. J. Knox normally entitled his paintings on the backing board, so this title may have been on the original and transferred during the refurbishment.
The painting depicts a small hamlet of thatched cottages, with smoke rising from their chimneys, so probably a spring or late summer view, as the trees are in full leaf and there are no signs of autumn leaves. There is a woman wearing a bonnet and bundled up in a large red shawl, walking up the track towards the cottages, with a young girl carrying a bundle, holding her hand.
George James Knox was born on the 4th March 1810, in Dublin Ireland. He had quite an illustrious pedigree and appears in The Peerage. He was the son of the Hon. George Knox PC FRS (1765-1827, by his first wife Ann Staples, daughter of Sir Robert Staples 7th Baronet. He was the Grandson of Thomas Knox 1st Viscount Northland of Dungannon and nephew of Thomas Knox, 1st Earl of Ranfurly.
Both he and his older brother Thomas Pery Knox 1806-1893, came to Britain at some stage. George and Thomas were both non-practicing barristers. His other brother Henry Barry 1808-1869, was born in Malvern, Worcestershire and became the Very Rev. H. B. Knox, Rector of Hadleigh in Suffolk. Presumably, George and Thomas were of independent means, leaving George to concentrate on his painting. He was primarily a landscape watercolourist and had a penchant for snow scenes and sunsets, often in pairs. He obviously travelled abroad painting as he is known to have visited France and the Channel Islands.
He worked from a London address in Hampstead and in one of the census records it stated that he received rents from his property, which may have partially supported his artistic lifestyle.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy (9 paintings), 20 at Suffolk Street and 1 at the British Institution between 1839 and 1859. He also exhibited 2 paintings at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1881 from an address in Plymouth. He was involved in illustrations for a magazine in the 1860s for a story about a huge snow storm. His auction results may be found at the usual sites.
He died in Christchurch, Hampshire on 11th June, 1897, where he had obviously retired with his brother Thomas, who also died there in 1893.
He is listed in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, The Dictionary of British Artists (Cololectors' Club) and the Dictionary of British Watercolour Painters by Mallalieu. His exhibition history can be found in Graves Dictionary.
