George II Giles Grendey Gainsborough Chair
A very very good and early George II Gainsborough armchair with provenance and believed to be by Giles Grendey (1693-1780)
This handsome and superb quality English armchair made from the finest mahogany, fluidly carved, and dating from c. 1750. With leather upholstered padded serpentine back and serpentine seat, the arm rests with acanthus carved supports and knotted flower head to centres - both the ancanthus carving and knotted flower a rare motif which matches that used on the renowned Gibside Gainsborough Chairs (which were made by Grendey a decade earlier in c. 1740).
Generous proportions, extremely comfortable and well padded throughout.
Complete and original this is an exceptionally rare example in very fine condition. Colour is particularly good and the chair has the beautiful soft patina that only time and use can produce. The leather upholstery with some attractive soft wear in excellent condition also.
Generous proportions, extremely comfortable and well padded throughout.
With provenance from the estate of an astute and knowledgeable private collector.
