An original watercolour of Geneva by Samuel Prout which was engraved for 'Sketches in France, Switzerland and Italy 1839', Plate LXII Geneva.
published by Charles Hullmandel for Hodgson and Graves c.1839. Please see illustration.
In 1819, after making his first trip to France, Prout became a member of the Oil and Watercolour Society. In the following years he regularly visited France, Belgium, the Rhine and Bavaria.The present watercolour was probably worked up from a drawing produced on one these trips as by 1835 he had moved from London to Hastings living in what he regarded as exile for the next five years. His style of drawing was particularly suited to lithographic reproduction and Prout's publications were highly successful.
Examples of his work can be found in the British Museum,the Victoria and Albert Museum,and several other leading museums and galleries in the United Kingdom.
