Fusee Dial Timepiece from 1882, by Charles Hawdon.
We present for consideration, this lovely fusee wall timepiece with 12” dial, by maker Charles Henry Hawdon, whose outlet and workshop were at 248 Cleethorpe Road, Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire.
Born 15 June 1851 at Grimsby, Hawdon was registered as a watch and clockmaker and jeweller. He was a well-known and highly regarded regional clockmaker, producing fine timepieces, striking antique clocks and watches (mainly under commission) for wealthy individuals, public buildings, schools, and railway stations in the geography of Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire. In 1882, he was residing with his brother John, at 2 Corporation Road, Grimsby.
However, Hawdon passed away on 15 July 1907 in Grimsby, at the relatively young age of 56, so his surviving and much sought-after quality horological work and craftmanship is scarce to find today on the open market!
(NB: By 1922 the business was known as Hawdon & Son, Grimsby [and still trading from 248 Cleethorpe Road], so presumably future generations of Hawdon’s family had continued to run and operate the business).
This antique clock has a turned solid Mahogany roundhead face, that sits over its boxed cabinet, both with good, aged patination. There is a hinged inspection door located on the side of the box and an operable lockable regulator door located at the bottom of the box. The clock retains its original metal dial, with black Roman numerals and Hawdon’s details, finished with its original pair of blued Pointer Spade hands, secured with a pinned collet. The clocks dial is then protected by a thick bevelled glaze mounted in a lockable cast brass bezel.
The clock benefits from a quality 8-day single fusee chain driven movement set between rectangular plates and turned pillars and comes with its original 77mm diameter brass pendulum bob and brass winding key.
…A superb example of high-quality fusee dial timepiece craftmanship, from one of Lincolnshire’s renowned clockmakers!
