French oil painting on canvas.19th Century.
Description: Ancient oil painting on canvas depicting the discovery of the cup stolen from Benjamin's sack.
Having found his brothers, who had sold him as a slave many years earlier, Joseph, without being recognized, fills them with gifts and asks them to return to Egypt with his father and younger brother because he wishes to reunite his family in the land where he became one of the most important officials of the pharaoh.
But since on the next trip they show up with little Benjamin but not with his father Jacob, Joseph is forced to devise a plan to get what he wants.
He therefore has the sovereign's silver cup hidden in Benjamin's sack, so that he can keep him to himself as a slave, so that the next time the father, so attached to his younger son, comes on a journey.
The scene of the Finding of the stolen cup in Benjamin's sack shows a group of armed men who, after stopping the group of brothers, open the bags of each one, including that of little Benjamin.
Compressed into a small space, the numerous figures are huddled in a variety of poses, sometimes from the front, now in profile, now from behind, but without straying too far from tradition, as evidenced by the substantial isocephaly of the figures.
The painting technique, on the other hand, is more up-to-date, with the use of bright colors and iridescent effects, as well as an accentuated use of shades to restore volume effects.
