Frank Thompson 1852-1927 Watercolour Pittenweem
This is a beautifully toned watercolour of the pretty main street of the Scottish fishing village of Pittenweem in Fifeshire, with its pastel painted houses and church antique clock tower at the end, although usually artists paint the attractive harbour. This street has hardly changed over the last 119 years since this watercolour was painted by the Durham artist Frank Thompson in 1898 and was exhibited by him at the Royal Academy in 1898. The painting has the label on the back in the artist's own hand which has been removed from the old backing board and retained, as shown.
Frank Thompson was born in Darlington, Durham in 1852 as Francis Thompson, a Christian name that he reverted to in latter years, but used Frank for his signatures. We initially couldn't find a birth or death year for him or some of the census records, until we looked under Francis. His father was a master confectioner and Frank was one of five children. He studied art at the Darlington School of Art in 1870, as he was commended for his architectural drawing in the newspaper that year and in the 1871 census he was listed as an art student. They were living at 4 Horse Market, Darlington.
By 1881, he was living at 1, Pelaw Leazes, Durham with his wife Margaret, nee Deighton b. 1855, who he had married in 1879 and he was Headmaster of Durham School of Art, a post he continued to hold for at least forty years. In the 1891 Census he and Margaret and their two children Nora and Ernest had moved to No. 3 Pimlico, Durham, where he would still be living in 1911, although by then he was a widower.
He exhibited 4 paintings at the Royal Academy, 2 at Suffolk Street, 2 at the Glasgow Institution, 2 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and 1 at the RBA, all but the 2 at Suffolk Street, being between 1890 and 1910. However, he exhibited locally in Durham and at the Bewick Club in Newcastle. He travelled widely in England and Scotland and had a painting holiday in Germany, which gave him new subject matter. He principally painted landscapes in watercolours.
Examples of his work may be found in the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, Sunderland Art Galler, Darlington Art Gallery and the Pen & Palette Club in Newcastle.
His is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club) The Dicitonary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, Artists of Northumbria by Marshall Hall and Painters in the Norther Counties of England and Wales by Dennis Child.
The painting has been newly double mounted to complement, is framed in possibly its original bronzed gilt frame and has a new backing board. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
