Fine and Unusual George III Wall Clock by A. Merga
Sn3109 Fine and Unusual George III, mahogany wall clock-Norfolk antique clock, having original painted dial signed A Merga, Nantwich, two train, 8-day movement with anchor escapement rack striking on a saucer bell, all in original, flamed mahogany case with reeded arched top and shaped door flanked by cluster columns, all retains original finish and patina. c1800
The movement has been cleaned and serviced by a horologist and it is guaranteed for 12 months (UK mainland).
Anthony Merga was born in c1801, married a local girl, Lucy Harding, and had several children. In 1838 he inserted a notice in the Chester Chronicle describing himself as a "Clock and Watch maker, dealer in Glass, Jewellery and Fancy Articles" and adding "All kind of gold and silver levers, horizontal, duplex, vertical, and other watches carefully repaired. English and French antique clocks, musical boxes, Jewellery &. Weather Glasses, Barometers and thermometers cleaned and repaired. All antique clocks and watches entrusted to the care of A Merga and J Harding (his father in law) will meet with the strictest attention. He died in Nantwich in 1858.
