F.E.Jamieson Oil on canvas Cottages Glencoe
We are pleased to offer for sale this large oil on canvas by the artist FRANCIS E. JAMIESON, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a view of Crofters Cottages in Glen Coe, with a cottage with an attached cow byre to the left of the loch and a woman carrying a bucket of water from the loch, walking up a rutted track along the banks. Obviously, Jamieson entitled the painting verso and when it was relined, the location was written on the new canvas.
Francis Jamieson was a painter in oil and watercolour of highland landscapes and coastal scenes. (The work of this highly prolific artist is curious since the oils and watercolours have two quite distinctive styles and subject matter. The oil paintings are most fequently seen and these are highland landscapes or loch scenes - sometimes they appear to be signed with pseudonyms such as 'W. Richards' and 'Phil Hips' - the location is usually inscribed on the reverse. The watercolours are often coastal scenes with boats and figures on a shore, painted in a more traditional Victorian style, and possibly pre-date the oils. F. E. Jamieson's beach scenes were published as postcards around 1920 by G. Ajelli & Co. of London on a textured card to give the appearance of an oil. Jamieson is known to have travelled widely in the South of England between the wars selling his work but does not appear to have exhibited.) This quote in parentheses is taken from Jeremy Wood's book 'Hidden Talents - A Dictionary of Neglected Artists Working 1880-1950. To see further examples of his work, please go look on google images.
Work by Francis Jamieson can be seen at artprice.com (318 auction results), artnet.com (65) and findartinfo.com (218). Please note that on all these sites you will find F. E. Jamieson variously listed as Francis E. Jamieson, F.E.Jamieson, Frank E. Jamieson, Frederick E. Jamieson etc.
The painting has been newly framed in a 3 1/4" gilt frame, which suits it very well. It is ready to hang.
