F. E. Jamieson fl.1885-1950 Oil Glencoe Scotland
We are pleased to offer for sale this lovely oil on canvas by the artist FRANCIS E. JAMIESON, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. Although the artist has not entitled verso on the stretcher, as he so often does, we have had a similar scene before, which was entitled Northside, Glencoe. The painting depicts a view of a narrow valley with a river winding through it and a couple of small, white slate roofed cottages on either side of the water. The scene is dominated by the mountains of the Aonach Eagach Ridge, the mountainous ridge on the northside of Glencoe.
'Francis Jamieson was a painter in oil and watercolour of highland landscapes and coastal scenes. (The work of this highly prolific artist is curious since the oils and watercolours have two quite distinctive styles and subject matter. The oil paintings are most frequently seen and these are highland landscapes or loch scenes - sometimes they appear to be signed with pseudonyms such as 'W. Richards' and 'Phil Hips' - the location is usually inscribed on the reverse. The watercolours are often coastal scenes with boats and figures on a shore, painted in a more traditional Victorian style, and possibly pre-date the oils. F. E. J's beach scenes were published as postcards around 1920 by G. Ajelli & Co. of London on a textured card to give the appearance of an oil. Jamieson is known to have travelled widely in the South of England between the wars selling his work but does not appear to have exhibited.) This quote in parentheses is taken from Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents - A Dictionary of Neglected Artists Working 1880-1950'. To see further examples of his work, please look on google.
