Extremely rare French Giant Carriage Clock %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A very rare iron-cased giant French carriage clock dated c.1900, the engraved case decorated with gilt work.

I have never seen another French iron carriage clock, not through my 30+ years of doing this, nor in books. The combination of a unique use of material and giant proportion has allowed the maker to combine two different colours to the case. The iron has the colour of bronze, the raised gilt work contrasts beautifully. This colour scheme is evocative of the French empire period.

The majestic case stands 10.5 inches with the handle up, with an Anglaise-style of handle. It has heavy beveled glasses to all sides, and a large beveled platform viewing glass.

The design comprises a gilded asymmetric Celtic ribbon interspersed with delicate foliate and floral motifs. This is all bordered by a geometric repeated cross design.

The perfect white enamel Roman dial has a subsidiary alarm dial below.

Blued steel matching spade hands.

The beautifully engineered 8-day movement strikes and repeats the hours and the passing of the half hour on a deep mellow-sounding gong.  The substantial plates are 4mm thick, and the backplate is numbered 7665.  The original silvered platform is massively oversized to be in proportion with its movement, all wheel-work has straight crossings.

The clock is complete with its original numbered key and leather carrying case.

A perfect 6th wedding anniversary present?
